The tower is a great example of the 16th century military architecture of the Manueline style. Its main function was to guard the entrance of the harbor and the access to the city of Lisbon. Today, with no doubt, the monument is the symbol of Lisbon and the golden age of the Discoveries. With its historical and cultural values it became part of the UNESCO World Heritage in 1983.
